Dropbox has always been about simplicity, speed and reliability but their limited free space was its major drawback. These days 2GB of free storage is nothing and everyone is looking for way hot to increase storage space. Of course you can upgrade to premium Dropbox account and get 50 or 100 GB but it will cost you up to $200. It’s still worth the money for many users but many users are not willing to pay and 50 GB might feel too much for some.
Today Dropbox announced that you can get 5GB of free storage if you start using Dropbox Beta version and import photos from your cameras, phones and SD cards directly to Dropbox with their new photo and video importer which is now in beta testing phase.
Once you will import first photo or video you will instantly get 500MB of free Dropbox storage and if you will continue to import your files for each 500MB of pictures or videos uploaded you will get 500MB of free storage. Basically you will fill all your Dropbox with pictures and videos and as reward you will get free storage to store more files. But here comes the best part, if you erase these pictures from Dropbox afterwards you won’t lose your gained storage and it will be permanently assigned to your account.
You can get up to 5GB of free storage but it means that you have to import at least 5GB of pictures and/or videos.
I tested new Dropbox’s import function with Samsung Galaxy S2, Nikon D90 and the basic SD card on both Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit version but as this function is still in beta and many users reports bugs in the forum so be careful and use this on your own risk.
All you have to do is visit Dropbox’s forum and download latest beta version and then you can plug in device via USB cable to computer (SD and other format built-in card readers will work as well).
- You will see AutoPlay notification (see picture bellow) and just choose ”Import pictures and videos using Dropbox”.

- You will see Dropbox Photo Importer dialog box and it will start loading your pictures and videos.

- Dropbox will then copy the files to your Dropbox folder, under the “Camera Uploads” folder. It will place all your photos in the same folder no matter how much different devices you will try to sync.

As files are being imported, Dropbox show notification every 500 MB uploaded to inform you of any space increases for your account.

If you want more free Dropbox space make sure to follow these extra steps and you can also recommend Dropbox to your friends to get even more free storage.
